West Bengal is one of the eastern states of India, it is known as West Bengal because it was on the west side of undivided Bengal at the time of Partition. Hence it is called West Bengal.
This state lies between 21.38’N and 27.10N’ and the longitudinal extend is 85.30E and 89.53E’. West Bengal is 623 Km wide from North to the south and 320km from west to east.
The narrowest part is Chopra in North Dinajpur which is also known as chicken’s neck and it's just only 9km wide.
Tropic of cancer (23.27N) passes through 5 districts such as Nadia(Krishna Nagar), Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Bankura, and Purulia.
West Bengal is the 14th largest state in India about 88,752sqkm and constitutes 2.67% of the area.
West Bengal shares boundaries with 5 neighboring states such as Bihar, Jharkhand(The largest boundary) in the west; Orissa in the south, Sikkim in the north, and Assam in the Northeast.
